I am so sad that it took me 5 years to read this book. I listened to the audiobook and this book is so well done it's unfair to other spooky, haunted house, gothic type books.

I just really love books that have a house that acts as a character in the story. The atmosphere in this world was so dense.

Apparently this is the year I read horror!

I really, really enjoyed Mexican Gothic. It was so atmospheric and, well, gothic. You could feel the cold, stifling darkness of High Place looming around you. The characters were so well drawn, and you simply loved to hate them. Noemí is one of the best heroines I have ever read—consistent until the very end. I loved her stubbornness, her poise, and her courage. This is a consuming story that wraps itself around you like a vine. I would definitely recommend!

3.5, but I round up. I really enjoyed this dark noir (and would very much watch the movie!) The middle dragged a bit for me, which was a bummer. Other than that, this was a delightfully spooky read for the beginning of fall.

This is a random side note, but the name Noemi is beautiful!

This was SO good. This symbiotic/parasitic relationship that could cause such horror and set in a time of class and gender inequality made for such a great story. It's a slow kind of burn, but wow, so so good.

So many familiar tropes, but so mastefully told. I keep seeing reviews saying "wait for it!". While the second half is more exciting than the first, the Black Swan-like slow burn up to that point is what clinches the 5 stars from me.

I chose this book as my first Fall read for the season and the atmosphere depicted was perfect. I could picture the dilapidated mansion surrounded by an old crumbling cemetery perfectly. I also liked how we got to the plot right away; within the first chapter we know that the main character's cousin sent a concerning letter and Noemi must go visit her to see if all is well.

I caught on to the mentions of mold, fungus, and mushrooms immediately and it took away some of the "scare factor" for me since I couldn't take killer mushrooms seriously, but it held my interest and I genuinely wanted to know how/if Noemi and her cousin escaped.

*As far as horror stories go, I would put this book in the disturbing/gory category rather than the leave-the-lights-on terrified category.
