okay so it’s good, i’m going to read the next one, but omg how can a book be 400 pages and have barely anything happen?? like it wasn’t boring but so little happened in the span of 400 pages. i enjoy the characters but if im being honest none of them really have very distinct characterization still. i enjoyed it but at what cost 😭

Tahereh Mafi has a way with writing beautiful descriptions and complex characters. Unfortunately, this talent, without any plot to support it, essentially equals to an ornate and wicked blade with no capable wielder to make use of it.
The story has potential, but it needs to move in order to progress. Stagnation has a repelling effect on a reader’s attention.

I really really wanted to give this a higher rating, but unfortunately the only things I liked about it were the references to the Shahnameh and the Farsi script for the chapter numbers. The story is all over the place and the characters are completely unlikeable.

Mafi’s writing is something I will forever remember. Her ability to paint the perfect picture of the events and characters reactions is above any other. I counted down the hours until I could pick this book up again, barely touching my phone because the thought of missing any detail was absurd. The direction this story has been going, I am truly captivated. Each character has me by the throat, and I’m so terrified but also so intrigued to see where this goes.

one step closer to the love triangle of a lifetime. i need all 3 of them to kiss and make up... though i fear this book is to heterosexual to accomplish my hopes & dreams

All vibes no plot continues in book 2 of this series and unfortunately I really wasn’t here for it.
I loved the first book and I was fine with the lack of plot because we were getting to know the characters and the world and I loved the magic getting woven through it but absolutely nothing happened in this book.

In 400 pages there were 2 location changes for 2 of the characters and then the other main character didn’t leave his palace until the last page of the book. I was incredibly bored and honestly disappointed because I thought we were actually going to learn something, everything that happened in this book could have been accomplished in 3 concisely written chapters.
The only reason that I’m giving it 3 stars is that I still have hope that maybe someday we’re gonna get somewhere in this universe.
