mmmm yess this was very endearing to read HOWEVER

i liked the first book so much better than this one. this felt very rushed and lack luster compared to its predecessor. personally, izumi breaking up with eriku felt forced and only because the author was pushing her to be with akio in the end (which felt weird??? don’t really have positive feelings towards it)
emotional funny inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

#teameriku

this book was slightly more disappointing than the first. slightly because i was team eriku but mostly because of the second half of the book. it felt sloppy & rushed in a way, the love triangle didn’t get enough time to work. but i did love the perspective on izumi’s parents relationship. that was grape.

listen I wanted to love every page of this book and honestly I did up until the last 30 pages or so.

In Tokyo Ever After I was in love with Akio, I thought he was a gem. I loved the dark brooding serious guy he was and how he opened up to Izumi. I was rooting for them. And then he ruined it. Broke up with her to be “noble” because it would never work and he didn’t feel worthy. I thought that was dumb and expected it to be resolved quickly.

Then it wasn’t and we had a love triangle introduced. Izumi starts to become friends with Eriku, her new tutor. Insert a fake dating scheme to make the media more accepting of her and her mom as a result. Then she starts to develop feelings for Eriku. AND SO DID I. I supported this new romance. Akio hadn’t been heard from for like 150 some odd pages. It was time to move on. Then suddenly Akio shows up in the end wanting Izumi back. She’s trying to decide whether to pick her first love who was just really hot and good with words. OR this new sweet kind boy who loves her dog and she feels comfortable around and actually has a ton in common with. who does she pick? the guy who broke her heart in the beginning of the book and didn’t speak to her for six months. Needless to say I loved the book until she chose the wrong guy in the last 30 pages.

ughhhhh I want book three and Eriku to get a second chance.

3.5 stars. Another super cute continuation of the Princess Diaries meets Crazy Rich Asians plot. Izumi continues in her Imperial Princess duties, struggles with following her heart, and living up to the expectations others place on her. A really quick read that could honestly but attached to the first book - it's extremely similar.

Thank you to Flatiron Books for an advance copy!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Tokyo Ever After, which is the Princess Diaries exploration of identity of my dreams. While I wasn't sure how the story's arc could be continued, I was excited to spend more time with Izumi. Tokyo Dreaming returns us to the Japanese royal family with the announcement of a royal engagement between Izumi's parents. However, the press and, more dauntingly, the Imperial Household Council, are hesitant to approve of the match. Izumi realizes that she can dedicate herself to becoming the perfect princess to help sway the Council to approve her parents' engagement: she will study for her college entrance exams, choose royal-approved majors and extracurriculars, and get a princess makeover. This book continues the Izumi's path of self-discovery. Now that she knows her identity, she must decide the life path she wants to pursue. Will she follow the predetermined plan approved by the royal institution, or will she find a chance to make her own way?

I enjoyed much of this arc. It was exciting to see Izumi carry out her princess duties with more ease, and revel in how much she has grown from the first book. The greatest surprise was seeing Izumi build a relationship with her cousins, her rivals in the first book. Once they have the chance to get to know each other, The Shining Twins take Izumi under their wings, and it is a treat. I love having the chance to revisit and be won over by antagonistic characters.

The romance between Izumi and her bodyguard was my favorite plot line in the first book. Unfortunately, this element suffered the most from the second-book syndrome. I had hoped to see Izumi and Akio work through their challenges together. Instead, we watch Izumi's development in this area through a love triangle.

Not a perfect sequel, but a fun read nonetheless.

all i can do after finishing this is sigh. and not in a good way. and while i didn’t hate it, i aggressively didn’t care at all about what was happening. it brushed over so many things that i think would’ve been cool. i wish more time was put into developing the characters in this book.

The messages were great but I think Akio could have been a better love interest.
