Thoroughly loved this

I enjoy BJ Novak and this book was funny. It was a good book for my commute (AFTER dropping the kids off not while they are in the car).

I was all ready to dismiss this as just another book that was published because it was written by an actor and not because of any literary value. I've never been so happy to be so wrong in my preconceived notions. I decided to listen to the audiobook version of One More Thing' (ok, mostly because Mindy Kaling narrates some of the stories and she is my hero) and it quickly became one of my favorite audiobooks to date. The use of guest narrators really brought something special to the stories - I like B.J. Novak's voice but Rainn Wilson as the warlord on "Julie and the Warlord" was just so excellent and funny. All that aside - yes, it was great to hear such skilled voice work, but the stories are also so beautifully written that, had I been reading the print book, I wouldn't have been able to put it down. There were many stories in the collection that I loved and that I find myself returning to again and again - notably "No One Goes to Heaven to See Dan Fogelberg", "The Market Was Down", and of course, "J.C. Audetat, Translator of Don Quixote". I didn't want "J.C. Audetat" to end and found myself thinking, at several points in the story, that it was almost like poetry. B.J. Novak has proven his considerable writing talent with this book, and I can't wait to see what he writes next.

I picked up this book for seventy-nine cents at thrift store while on vacation (...along with four others). And while it required me to rearrange my entire suitcase to fit them all in, it was completely worth it. Especially for this read.

I was interested in this book because [a:B.J. Novak|7115158|B.J. Novak|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1392933716p2/7115158.jpg] plays Ryan on The Office, he's written and directed for the show as well. I once picked up his children's book [b:The Book with No Pictures|20821299|The Book with No Pictures|B.J. Novak|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1400873472s/20821299.jpg|40167157] in a gift shop, thumbed through it, and got a pretty good laugh out of it. I was hoping this collection of short stories would be just as entertaining.

It most DEFINITELY was.

It was hilarious in a crude, sarcastic, clever way. Some stories were more tame while others were filled with innuendos, a lot of four-letter words, and just downright raunchy punch lines. The stories were clever and relatable, highlighting aspects of life and the condition of being human. I'm sure plenty of the humor went over my hear, but being of aware of that increased my overall enjoyment. I knew I was reading something by a clever and intelligent writer. It was well crafted humor that delivered truths and lessons without being forced.

Certainly one of my favorites of the year.

Dang. I wanted to love it. Maybe I was too tired to appreciate it. I just couldn't get into it. I'm going to try again. I shan't be dissuaded so easily. Ugh.
