Dostoevskij non si smentisce mai, e anche in quest’opera mette totalmente a nudo l’animo umano, narrandoci allo stesso tempo una vicenda incredibilmente interessante. Come suggerisce il titolo dell’opera, e come d’altra parte succede spesso nei libri dell’autore, tema centrale è quello dell’insulto, dell’orgoglio ferito. La trama vede protagonista una giovane ragazza che causa uno scandalo fuggendo con l’uomo di cui si è innamorata, il quale padre ha fatto causa al padre di lei. È chiaro come le premesse siano estremamente interessanti e in totale spirito Dostoevskiano, ma la trama non è che un pretesto, e il vero valore dell’opera giace nella minuziosa descrizione della psicologia dei personaggi.

Il primo grande romanzo di Dostoevskij sviscera già tutti i temi più importanti per lui: la colpa, il perdono, la povertà, l'orgoglio, l'amore. Solo i ricchi ne escono sconfitti, i poveri invece ne sono innalzati: quanto più soffri, tanto più sei degno di compassione.

Le donne, in particolare, ne escono immacolate: intelligenti, forti, curiose, umiliate ma mai succubi, offese ma mai vinte.

Una prova stupenda, ma non mi aspetto di meno da lui.

That book, that one book, I certainly remember now. Have I forgotten it or was it buried in the back of my memory.

An early Dostoevsky. A lot going on in this, to the point that I sometimes struggled to follow the storylines. Yes, they are interwoven, but Dostoevsky sets them up as their own thing before revealing their connections at the end. So up until the end it made me feel a little lost trying to keep track of them all in my head.

An interesting ending that calls forward to Crime and Punishment in its religious nature (but not in its tragic nature).

A good book for Dostoevsky completionists, but unless you really like this era of literature I’m not sure you’ll be able to stick it out. 

(This edition is also terrible. Would not recommend at all.)
