Fast-paced. Dark humor. A deadly competition between two vigilante serial killers who fall in love. I simply couldn't help myself. And I am incredibly glad that I did! Even though I'm definitely scarred for life (seriously, read the content warnings before...Weaver isn't messing around).
This book made me laugh-out-loud probably more than I would care to admit. I loved Rowan's quick wit (and the fact that he's obsessed with Blackbird from day one), and sweet -- scoop-your-eyeballs-out -- Sloane. This is truly a tale of unconditional love, albeit insanely grotesque circumstances. It's a riot!

When two serial killers who kill evil people meet and fall in love, things get...messy.
Well, thank f*ck for the content warnings at the beginning, though to be honest, they partly got me to read this book as I was intrigued. This was my first dark romance, and it was a ride! I liked this book's mix of funny and disturbing, which probably says something about me.
The writing was a bit too descriptive at certain points for my ability to visualize things vividly, so be warned if you can also create very vivid pictures in your mind while you listen!
Overall it was enjoyable if a bit graphic and I mostly liked the main characters! I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

 Narrator Rating- 5 stars
Both narrators did an excellent job! You could tell they put production money into the audiobook!

Butcher and Blackbird - Brynne Weaver
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5) / 🌶️🌶️🌶️ / Hardcover/ TW: oh boy…assault, violence, abuse, torture - like if you have any general discomfort with violence - not for you. (It’s about two serial killers, use your head lol)

Here’s the thing - I’m a sucker for a cinnamon roll MMC. And even though he is an actual serial killer, you CANNOT tell me that is not what Rowan is. He’s a dream. A dominating, Irish, “Yes, Chef” of dream 🤣

I had a lot of fun with this book. It’s a a new twist on a classic competition trope. It was fairly predictable but nonetheless enjoyable.

I will say that I don’t think this book is as *spicy* as some people seem to think it is - I think it’s the dominating communication that people may think is intense? Idk - there isn’t a whole lot of shocking stuff here. Again, still enjoyable and I’m absolutely not yucking anyone’s yum! It’s just not as depraved as some people seemed to make it lol.

All in all - this book definitely has a specific audience in mind (me, I’m that audience.) If you like a story where he falls first, with witty banter and some eye gouging (sorry, plucking) this is for you. If you like competition with “good girl” and “touch her and you die (literally” vibes, this is for you. If you hate those things and relatively descriptive scenes of torture and killing, shelve this one.

For a book about serial killers, this was incredibly boring. There really isn’t much of a plot and somehow NO STAKES. It’s like police don’t exist in this world and serial characters all have special names like they exist as supervillains in The Boys.

Back to no stakes, there is absolutely zero tension. The killings made it somewhat interesting but without any stakes it wasn’t compelling. The one scene with tension was introduced as a twist so there was no build up and it had a quick resolution (and really only served as a vessel for a third act break up).

Really just a lackluster romance with gore. Read Mindfuck instead.

“I would kill for you, and I have. I would do it again, every damn day. I’d turn myself inside out for you. I would die for you. I don’t just like you, Sloane, and you fucking know it.“

First of all, if you’re reading the review of this book, make sure you read the trigger warnings first. Or maybe you know, the first few pages of the book to get the gist. It’s a book about two serial killers, what do you expect?

Seriously, check the trigger warnings, okay? You have been warned by me and the author.

Been seeing this book in BOTM so I thought that since it’s hard to get a copy of this in PH, why not just read it in audiobook - because it was on sale and I wouldn’t miss up a chance to  read about serial killer romance. I’m actually so glad that I bought the audoobook version because the acting of the two narrators was so good. Rowan’s VA with his accent legit upped the game and lowkey, really made me love those kind of accents (I mean, I already love Scottish accents to begin with and Rowan had that sort of accent? Irish, was it?). Plus the fact that the author really added their own comedic sense of humor, it was really my type of book.

It was a slow-burn type of romance that was in really fast paced plot, if you get what I mean. Really recommend this to be read in the audiobook version because I really can’t get enough of those VA. *chef’s kiss*

The slow burn romance was also just right because you see them pining for each other but because of their situation (hello past trauma that led them to be what they are????), it took them longer than it’s supposed to be to get together. Also, they started as friends too!!! Such a good story to pass up time especially if you’re feeling like you want to laugh out loud!
