This is a really hard read so check trigger warnings (storygraph is reccommended) if you are sensitive to certain content! This is a really raw look into the life of a woman who was born into a cult and transferred herself into the military where she saw a good few paralells-- especially regarding the treatment of women. I really enjoyed her perspective throughout.

Horrifying. But also, just what I was looking for in a book telling a story like this. Unlike some of the other titles I’ve read recently about cults/extremists/etc, Mestyanek not only recounts her personal story, but also examines how the larger culture of the Children of God, the US military, and society as a whole perpetuate an environment that allow these experiences to occur.
