I'm so in awe at the ease with which Helen Oyeyemi writes immediately immersive and haunting stories
I tried to like this book, I really did. But every story - despite some very lovely prose - fell flat. Every single one started off fine and then by the end either went in a completely random direction or simply stopped. Big disappointment.
this book flew way over my head & i loved it! i didn't have to Get it to enjoy it; the stories were fun/interesting/intriguing even without an overarching Point. i esp liked the first story.
2.5-3 Stars
This short story collection was very different that others that I have read, and 1/2 the time I was absolutely confused on what I had just read, taking moments after reading the story to think, is there something more deeper to this that I am not getting? To me, I liked the first story, it was very flowery and the ending saved it. Idk, I just couldn't push myself to read more than one a day, and I'm good. I hope that the next book of her's that I pick up is better. I really do.

I enjoyed these stories. The writing was excellent and the author showed many different voices. The stories were creative and mostly relatable (even fantastical ones).
Perhaps I missed something in the reading but it seemed odd that at least one of the stories, "drownings," didn't seem connected to the others, which all had connections to each other (same character pool). I particularly liked "drownings," which felt like a fairy tale. Some of the others were quite abstract, like the one about the grief coping tool; I couldn't figure out why the characters thought the tool would be useful, or what the tool even was...

I love Helen Oyeyemi and would read her version of the phone book but I'm not sure if this story collection was really for me. It took me about 6 weeks to read it and it made me feel preeeeeeeetty dumb at points. Beautiful though!

An excellent collection of semi connected tales with engaging characters and surreal atmospheres. Oyeyemi always finds a way to make me think more deeply about my own perceptions through the use of interesting but not-flashy stories.

When these stories don't work, they are too meandering. Confusing. When they work, they REALLY work for me. The Russian nesting doll of narratives, and the wandering story lines, make for surreal, layered works. I like a lot of the character work, though sometimes there are too many to keep track of. And wow, the tone! I've never read a tone like you find in these stories. Odd, unsettling, even dreadful, yet lighthearted and optimistic. Sort of folklorish Black Mirror episodes that end in a major key. Anyway, I haven't given Helen Oyeyemi's books a 5 star yet, but she's one of the authors I'm most excited about. And the star rating only means so much--to me, anyway.
