Everything I wanted and more.

This was SO FUN!!! But it also highlighted some alarming things that are definitely already happening—people living rich virtual lives while barely living and interacting in the real world, devastating climate change, the general decay of society, etc. But there are also so many reminders of what it was like to grow up in the ‘80’s, which was such a weird and wonderful era. This stirred up a lot of emotions for me. I am close to 40 years old and grew up with many of the games, bands, books, tv shows, movies, and ad campaigns mentioned in this book. I was also part of the first teen generation to use the internet and had an avatar and persona on AOL IM and LiveJournal that helped me break out of my shell in real life. I think this novel is what will happen in the future—maybe not with Halliday’s magnificent contest, but as we deplete our resources and real interpersonal interactions fail by the wayside I think we will have people who live their entire lives on the Internet and that is terrifying.

This book reminded me of reading adventure tales when I was a kid (which I will not mention here because people will no doubt be offended by the parallel). It was totally gnarly, dude.

I was very sucked in to the story. I enjoyed it but it wasn't like a "good" story

Enjoyed it, but I feel like some of the liberties taken in the movie were better than the book in some ways.
adventurous challenging dark emotional funny hopeful informative lighthearted mysterious reflective sad tense medium-paced

Easy read, although it felt a little bit embarrassing due to the fact that it was trying so hard. Some serious cringe moments at the complete lack of subtly to the referencing. But hay, it kept me amused through to the end- I'd give it 2 and a half stars if I could.

I enjoyed the story. I'm a sucker for all the pop culture stuff that was thrown at you, so it was a fun ride for what it was. I get the negative reactions but overall it wasn't terrible like it's made out to be.
