Very fun book, as someone who plays games a lot, this was great to read through. Unfortunatelly a lot of the 80s references were lost to me, so when there are long portions of explaining some old movie, game etc. I was feeling a bit lost, but it didnt take away that much from the enjoyment! The prose was nice to read, nothing confusing, good balance of flavour text and more quick straightforward descriptions (apart from the first few chapters, those were a bit too long)
The characters were all loveable, and I enjoyed seeing them interact with each other. The protagonist can feel like a too much of a perfect hero sometimes, but honestly I didnt mind, I was cheering him on when heInfiltrated IOI and hacked into their systems and made it out in secret, that was so tense!
Plot starts out very slow, the first 50 pages I was kinda bored, it was lot of over-explaining of basic stuff like MMO mechanics. I have experience with VR so I kinda could easily imagine how stuff worked, so all the explaining felt a bit tedious, but once the first key is found, it picks up FAST, and doesnt stop. Its a very simple premise, be the first to find the easter egg, and it promotes competition, even amongst friends, which makes it exciting!
If you enjoy gaming, VR, sci-fi, retro stuff definitely check this out, even if you saw the movie (the book is completely different, apart from the premise, and better). Ending felt a bit rushed, would have liked a bit longer epilogue, just take one chapter from the slow begining and put it to the end! I think it would work better for me.
By the way, If you are someone who spends a lot of time in VR, especially virtual worlds like VRChat, definitelly check this out, it can even be reflective, if you feel addicted to it, it handles that aspect of virtual worlds too.

Intriguing. Heard the book better than film (which I've not seen) and enjoyed it on the whole.
Fun. Fast-paced. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned a likeness to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". You don't have to be a geek to enjoy this. ;)
Awesome! I listened to the audio which is read by Wil Wheaton. Hilarious! He has to describe himself in the future as being president of the online virtual world that everyone lives in. Packed with gamer geek references
I didn't really get the video game OR 80s references and nostalgia, but it had a compelling plot. The technical minutiae reminded me of The Martian. (And the male audiobook narrator, probably.)

A bit slow and tedious at the start, but well worth it.
