Overall really enjoyed the world building and flow of the book, curious to see where the characters go.
Soooooo... holy crap.
There were a lot of things that I had to get past, or get used to, with this book, first of all. One, I haven't read any high or epic fantasy since early high school, so that was new for me. Secondly, I didn't even realize until halfway through that there was a freaking GLOSSARY in the back, because of the way the book is formatted for the Kindle. Thirdly, there were a few moments where tense, dramatic moments were ruined by melodramatic writing - for example, characters screaming, "Nooooooooo!" in nightmares, or watching others die, etc.
However, this was pretty freaking fantastic. I constantly got Perrin and Mat mixed up until about halfway through - and then when their characters were more contrasted, I was able to appreciate all the characters individually. I can't think of a character in this book that I didn't find compelling. There were points where I thought, "Well, would have seemed a lot less abrupt and afterthought-like if we'd had even some hint or related incident of this earlier in the book" (for example, the wolf thing seemed rather, I dunno, convenient). However, it all made sense, and while I got a little distracted by some heavy LOTR overtones, for the most part I enjoyed ever moment of this book. Can't wait to move on to the second one. Actually, I can; I'd like to blow through a couple shorter books before I sit down with another volume that will take me two months. XD

Starting a new fantasy series is always daunting and probably none more so than the Wheel of Time series. However this was a fantastic introduction and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Some reviewers on this site have criticised the book(s) because they fall into tired old tropes. I did not find this to be the case at all. Of course it borrows from other works such as Lord of the Rings and Dune, to name but two, but it takes certain plot ideas and used them to create a fantastic world. Furthermore it gives us a host of great characters who you feel invested in. I don't have a favourite character because I love them all equally. I'm glad I finished this first book before the Amazon series and I look forward to journeying through the rest of the novels as well!
