It's hard to read Eye of the World without several decades of fantasy and genre fiction that has come since. You know the ridiculous fantasy tropes for which the genre gets made fun of all the time? If most of them didn’t come from Jordan, they were popularized by him.

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

tentatively calling this a dnf because I genuinely don't see myself going back to it... part of me is still interested in the story after reading a good chunk of this first book, but am I interested enough to commit to fifteen books?? definitely not. I feel like I gave it a fair chance and it just wasn't that great T_T

I have heard a lot of ppl saying it improves later on, but now that I'm back at college I have a limited amount of reading time anyway so why would I read hundreds of pages of rand & co wandering through the woods periodically being attacked when I could read so many other (more fun) things in that same time... I did initially like egwene's narration at the start and then was hooked through the trolloc attack with rand's father and everything, but yeah again. the prospect of reading fifteen of these is not smth I can handle rn tbh, it wasn't that good T_T

Took about 100 pages to get into the book, but once the action and journey began, I found myself immersed in what is new but old. Legends, prophecies, a character like Treebeard, a long journey consisting of a “fellowship” made up of not just a few friends from a small village but also women who wield power and men/creatures from other lands. While very much like Tolkien in these regards, it is still a delightful read. 4.5/5 stars.
