The Eye of the World

I read this book in middle school and I got pretty far in the series before another Harry Potter book came out and I got distracted. Now that the series is completed, I decided to start back at the beginning with audio books.

I maintain my rating of 4 stars because I do really enjoy this series and this book but parts of it tend to drag. I love all the characters and I appreciate the depth of the world building but too many times I found my attention drifting during some of the detailed descriptions and expositions, despite the wonderful narrators.

This book is filled with adventure and conflict and mysteries and fantasy. There is even some romance and humor. It's well rounded but does represent a commitment because of its length. Rand, Perrin, and Nineve are favorites of mine but I enjoy following the divergent paths of all the characters Jordan has to offer. They are strong and intriguing, with flaws and deep histories. I think it is standard, good quality fantasy and I understand why some people liken this first book to Tolkien.

I just kept glazing over as I was reading it. Maybe I'll give it another go at some point but I couldn't get into it.

I watched the show first. I read this book too help clarify what was confusing. But things changed so much between the show and book so I'm left with more questions.

Read this book if you like LOTR or Eragon. For me it's a little too dense. I don't regret reading it, but I won't be continuing the series, even if I "skip too book 8" as most people recommend. I'll just read the wiki summary.

Lord of the Rings redux
slow-paced

Very 50/50 overall with some great parts and some parts that seemed to drag on beyond comprehension.

I did not like this book at first, and I was prepared to continue not liking. Just like a lot of high fantasy theres a lot of exposition dumps and names and words you dont understand, I dont mind this often but in this book it just felt so cookie cutter and basic. The start of this book takes a lot of not so subtle inspiration from the lord of the rings.

Around halfway through the book however I started to really enjoy it, while a lot of cliches and dumb naming schemes stayed around the characters and world building made up for it. Most of the exposition dumps were well done and came from interesting sources. I look forward to following the journey of these character in the bajillion books left in the series.
