This was every bit as good as I expected it to be. Brought back sooo many childhood memories. Somehow I felt that the story was a bit more tragic in the movie as opposed to the book, but that might have something to do with the fact that I am reading this now as an adult whereas I watched the movie constantly at around the age of <6ish. Great story ♡ 5/5

I prefer "The Secret Garden" than "A Little Princess". I personally prefer the 1995's movie by Alfonso Cuarón. This is one of the few cases were I prefer more the movie than the book, probably cause my expectations were tooo high. I adored that movie when I was a little girl.
This is a story about a little girl, Sarah. She is treated by her father (a rich business man) like a princess, but her reality changes from one day to the next because a tragedy.
The mesage of the book is clear, there's moments in life when everthing is a mess, you can focus on them (and only think on that, and being negative) or you can try to "fake a better reality" around you.

If children read this kind of book anymore, it would be a good one to provide for them. The main idea is that a positive attitude and, in this case, a good imagination can get you through adversity.
Hard to know how to rate this. It's charming in a comforting, sentimental way. But it is definitely a product of its time, and there's a lot that didn't sit well with me anymore. In particular, there's a sense that Sara deserves food and shelter and affection not because all children deserve those things, but because she is so special and clever and unique. The other children, who are mostly described as fat and stupid, all worship her. The adults (aside from the villains) treat Sara as a rare gem who's somehow more deserving than other children. For instance, the "Indian gentleman" sees two destitute and mistreated servant girls living in the attic across the street, and decides to secretly help... only one of them. Because he sees something special in her face, I guess? The other girl is given the leftovers and expected to be grateful for them. It's a satisfying triumph story in one way, but one with a very narrow vision and perspective.
My Mom bought me this book when I was real young. Sara character is one that steals the hearts of readers. She is soft, modest, sweet, and sees the good in everyone. She is born into a wealthy family, but when her Father dies she is left with no family. She is treated with no love from the owner of the school. She becomes a servent to all the students. While the ending is not a big suprise, the character development and language in the book holds the interest and heart of its readers.

Movie remains supreme. Movie Sara would never have made Becky into her servant.
