A fabulous book emphasizing that true nobility lies in our choices. This book teaches the importance of gratitude, keeping a cheerful disposition, having charity, serving others, imagination, and always remembering who you really are.

I love this story, and have loved it since I saw the movie as a child. Sara and her friends are such kind and considerate and hopeful girls and it’s a truly heartwarming tale, mixing the bad and the good, the sorrowful and the uplifting in good measure. I do think that I prefer the changes the movie made in many ways, but I thought the way the book deals with the beggar girl that Sara meets and tying up her story was a nice new piece that I didn’t get from the movie.

One of my favourite books when I was young and still fun to listen to as an adult

Sarah is simultaneously endearing and infuriating, but I love Frances Hodgson Burnett's writing and storytelling too much for anything less than 4 stars.

A great memory from my childhood. I wonder where our copy is...

Every time I read this book, I'm more struck by its racism and classism than the last time.

I still think it's a good story, but everyone is quite happy with their position in life, as long as they are well-treated by their "betters."

Growing up, A Little Princess was on of my all-time favorite movies, so I knew I had to choose this for my 1905 read this year. And I was not disappointed.

It was a true page turner, earning its five stars with ease. Although I could see how the main character, Sara, could be disliked by a certain reader for being to "perfect", I truly enjoyed reading her. She is an intelligent, creative, headstrong child who's optimism and imagination never leave her despite the worst of life's circumstances trying to level her. Burnett writes in a style that absorbs you in and suddenly you have read 50 pages in what seems like minutes.

Even with all the terrible things that happen, I would describe this book as an uplifting novel that truly captures a child's mind. It has all the delicious angst of the age as well as having a true good vs evil plot. My only critiques are the harsh descriptions of Ermengarde, which maybe weren't bad for the time, but read cringey today. And then I actually like the movie ending better than the book ending--which is a rarity.

This will definitely go down as one of my favorite books of the century.

Nostalgic read

This book was very sweet. A predictable happy ending, but sometimes that is all you want. Very enjoyable.
