Loved this - read it as a child, and will read it to my own kids. A children's book that has stood the test of time - some of the language and the attitudes are perhaps a little dated, but that doesn't detract from the gentle and expert storytelling. Recommended.

Those clothes! That doll! An evil headmistriss! And especially that attic!
Man...this is a beautiful book.
I read it shortly after reading “The Secret Garden,” which left me frankly underwhelmed...so I’ll admit I went in with very low expectations. “A Little Princess” absolutely exceeded every one.
The writing, plot, characters, character development, setting...everything was just delightful and spot on, what I really wished “Secret Garden” would have been. I’m honestly flabbergasted at the difference between the two books.
Stellar read, and one I’d like to find a super nice or unique copy of for my home library.

This is a very sweet story about a young, resourceful girl who manages to survive some brutal circumstances to come out the other side better than before. The story of Sara Crewe is one that I was familiar with from my childhood but there was something wonderful about reading the story again as an adult.
There is something a bit “Anne of Green Gables” in this story, as Sara spends most of the book pretending that she is someone or somewhere else. I suppose that makes sense given her circumstances though. This is a great story for young girls (or young boys) to read as its not particularly difficult but also has a satisfactory ending.
