Another book my dad read with me when I was a kid. It seems as though we went to a movie for this story as well. It has a similar feel to The Secret Garden I think.

Little Sara Crewe is taken to a boarding school to live and learn while her father is away at sea. While there, she has her own parlor and private bedroom, a horse of her own, a french maid, and piles of gifts. When Daddy's money dries up though, Sara is forced to work as a servant in the school and goes hungry quite a bit. This is the opening premise of this book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, also the author of The Secret Garden.

Having read The Secret Garden and A Little Princess, I can say that this book is far superior to Garden. In this book, Sara learns about the consequences of cruelty vs. kindness and lies vs. the truth. Sara Crewe is one humble character who truly cares for (most of) her companions. The story itself is rather predictable, though ultimately very satisfying. This book is labeled as a level 6 for Accelerated Readers and does have quite a few big words or words not in common use today. There are also some complex ideas mentioned in here, including the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette, and several other figures who were guillotined (this is mentioned in this book). Overall this was a great read and I really enjoyed it.
