Having grown up with the abridged version of this ([b:Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's|1588716|Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's|Frances Hodgson Burnett|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1185541131s/1588716.jpg|14116573]) I was eager to revisit the same story in some depth. Perhaps because I had grown up reading a shorter version, I think a great deal of the early parts of the book (about just how rich and fortunate she was before her father died) could have been a bit pared down. When a big event like that happens in your life, a real game changer, it is not so much the person you were before but the person you are after that is important. Miss Burnett seemed to give equal weight to both.
Other than at, a terrific story, but the vocabulary is tough for kids today -this made it a read-aloud, not a read alone, for my 8 year old. In fact, other than the exaggerated villainy of Miss Minchin and the fact that it WAS about a child, it doesn't seem like a childrens novel at all.

I was about to give this book 4.5 stars, but then the story took a turn. It is so different from the movie! As much as I love the movie (and I mean LOVE, I’ve seen it 20+ times…), the book’s plot twist toward the end was just as exciting. Love them both!
It was one of the first classics I read as a child and is still one of my favorite books as an adult
