- fascinating world
- there are very severe consequences and Young doesn't hold back on very violent maiming and murdering
- but simultaneously there is some ya-fantasy-main-character-syndrome hand-waving to explain away some plot points
- i don't Greatly mind but it would've been nice to see complete grittiness and them actually facing problems that they aren't insanely suited towards solving
- im interested in seeing how those not in this industry treat their children? like if they're just a baker's kid, do their parents still neglect and emotionally traumatize them?
- sheepishly, i am kinda more interested in the other characters besides the main 2
the guy fell too fast with 000 interaction and then their buildup was literally only looks and touches. their few conversations were already so tense with "chemistry" that came almost out of nowhere - where is the sister gonna go after this? how was it like those years she had to stay with her mom before ML came back for her?
- how did the two others meet and end up together and what is the social climate for their relationship?
- their stories just seem more compelling to me without the trope-y ya romance-ness ig
- i also hope for more actual found family and not just smirks and bullying of fable, ouch
I loved her with a love that broke me.

✨My Opinion✨
Fable was a compelling heroine that was dynamic and not overtly feminine, which I really liked. She was practical, humble, smart and tenacious. She knew her worth.
West was stoic, but a caretaker. While not flowery with his words, his willingness to risk it all for those he cared for made him a man to be respected and admired as a romantic interest for Fable. He was the stability she could depend on when her dad was absent.
The stakes were high from the beginning and really drew me in to the story. Survival, found family, parental death, estranged family, enemies-to-lovers. There was a lot going on, but it was spread out and explored fully so you didn’t feel like you were bombarded with trope.
The tension that came with the hesitant savior/enemies-to-lovers was well done. I enjoyed every moment.
The word building was seamlessly intertwined with the familiarity of maritime seafaring. It gives you the sense that oceans are the same in any world, and maybe even an additional character.
I enjoyed it so much and started the second book right away.

I really loved the main character of this story. She’s scared and wary, but also strong and self-sufficient. She’s survived on her own and developed a lot of useful skills. I appreciated that she isn’t just naturally gifted at everything. She’s actually had to develop all of the talents she has. That was super refreshing.
The world she lives in is also quite interesting. I loved the pirate vibes and the sense of adventure. I enjoyed how each island seemed to have its own culture. It kept things exciting.
My only complaint is that I felt like this book just cut off right in the middle of the story and that some of the details toward the ending were a bit rushed to accomplish this. It was minor though.
All in all, if you like fantasy, strong female characters, and adventure, you should check this one out!
