Exquisite also describes this book. It is heartbreaking to read that such an acclaimed artist struggled economically, but heartwarming to know that at least she was given recognition in her lifetime.

I now feel the need to revisit her poetry.

Describes Gwendolyn Brooks' life from a small child in Chicago hearing her father read poetry aloud to winning several poetry prizes, culminating in the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Includes support she received along the way from her mom to a teacher.

Beautiful, colorful, joyful illustrations by Cozbi Cabrera.

I would have loved to have more of her poetry quoted. "Clouds" is at the end, which provides a motif throughout the book.

Includes Author's Note, Timeline, Sources for Quotes, and Selected Bibliography.

Not my favorite style of illustrations, but I love picture book biographies and this one is no exception. I had maybe heard of Gwendolyn Brooks before but this gave me a chance to learn who she was and see a few bits of her poetry.

My main disappointment with this book is that it say "The Poetry... of Gwendolyn Brooks," yet there is only one of her poems printed in the book. So, I think it would be more appropriately titled simply: "Exquisite: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks."

I liked the flow of the verse in telling a simple biography of Brooks. It felt an appropriate level of detailed for young readers (or those who still enjoy having an adult/older person read to them). The illustrations really help bring Brooks' story to life.

As an adult reading this book, I am now fascinated to learn more about her and especially I want to try some of her poetry. I'm not someone who has found a lot of connection with poetry in the past, but the one poem included in this book was so beautiful I think maybe it's just I hadn't yet come across a poet whose poems I could feel something from. The two collections mentioned in this book are: [b:A Street in Bronzeville|9580298|A Street in Bronzeville|Gwendolyn Brooks|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1446525794l/9580298._SY75_.jpg|14467205] and [b:Annie Allen|863331|Annie Allen|Gwendolyn Brooks|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327045676l/863331._SX50_.jpg|848755].

Suzanne Slade presents another fantastic picture book about a historical figure. This time the author turns their pen to Gwendloyn Brooks, the Poet Lauret from Illinois, and the first Black woman to win a Pulitzer Prize.  The book is a great tale.  I do think it ends in an awkward place, but it gives the reader an idea of who Gwendolyn was and might make them interested in learning more.
