This is a cute book about a girl who really wants a pet but her parents say no so she makes different objects and her brother be her pet. I liked it because we don't have any pets either, but --spoiler alert--Prudence ends up getting one at the end.
A priceless, precious panarama of surprising 'picks.' -Monty K.

Prudence wants a pet, but her parents say no. She makes do with a variety of objects (including her little brother). Witty text and simple drawings blend to create a charming story.
Prudence really wants to have a pet, but her parents have a bunch of reasons why she can't have one. Luckily, Prudence is imaginative & finds pets that are not messy - like Branch. But something bad happens to all of Prudence's pets, requiring her to find new ones - but none of them are quite right, or last quite long enough. Prudence, however, is a determined girl - and waits patiently for a pet.
I found Prudence's parents to be very mean, destroying all her pets the way they did, not caring about Prudence's connection to them. (Her dad turns her first pet, Branch, into firewood!!! How rude!) I liked the format of the book though (long) and Prudence's determined creativity. Three cheers for Branch!

Love how the story comes full circle at the end. Prudence is quite the character!
This one is sweet. We read it as a girl who works through her disappointment of not getting a pet from her parents. She perseveres and uses her imagination to play with "pets" until she wears her parents down (not maliciously).
Prudence is determined to get a pet. Her parents don't think she is ready for one and say no, so she finds her own pets. She is very creative with her choices. Love the expression of the characters and think this would be a great book to use with kids.
