Prudence desperately wants a pet and when her parents refuse, she ends up adopting various objects: a branch, a shoe, her brother, a tire,... When her birthday comes her parents relent.
Cute child center/focused book. May try for a pet story time.

Have you desperately wanted a pet? When you are young, it can be difficult to own a pet. Some children beg, whine or cry. Prudence asks - over and over again. Every rejection turns into an opportunity to find her very own, one of kind pet.
I love the creativity of this story. It brings a pet rock to a whole new level. This book would go along well with A Pet for Petunia by Paul Schmid, Gilbert Goldfish Wants a Pet by Kelly DiPucchio or Melvin and the Boy by Lauren Castillo.

Loved it! Story is funny and engaging- kids loved the pictures and got the humor. Great readaloud.
I like how Prudence tries to come up with her own solutions to the no-pet problem.
Such a charming a fun picture book for children. While I was reading it to my youngest, the rest of my family gathered around to listen in. It was that good.
Prudence wants a pet, but her mom and dad tell her no. Prudence tries to adopt various objects as pets, but it isn't the same. Finally, her parents buy her a kitten for her birthday. Children may appreciate Prudence's antics with twigs, branches and shoes as she searches for a pet. The book is an odd shape. It is short and long. It could be difficult for small children to hold the book or for a reader to hold the book and child on their lap together.
When Prudence hounds and pesters her parents to get her a pet, they unflinchingly always say now. So Prudence decides to invent her own pets: a branch, a shoe, an old tire, even her baby brother. But she soon finds out there is no substitute for the real thing. Will her parents ever get her the pet she so desires?
The simple, endearing illustrations make this a warm and light-hearted read, but the humorous and resonant ending is really what made this book become a favorite for me.

Very cute story about Prudence, a little girl who desperately wants a pet. It's the typical story of a child who wants a pet, parents say no, so child gets creative. Old storyline, no new twist in this book, but still just a sweet sweet story. Prudence is creative enough to even call a branch, then a twig, her pet.
