Pacing was a bit slow towards the end, but I found the premise very engaging and I was eager to know what happened.

Historical fiction, post WWII, spies, some mystery, love, and family… pretty much my perfect combination. Had me hooked until the end.

I mostly liked this. I admit that sometimes I read close to bed time and I fall asleep while reading which means the next time I pick up a book, I don't clearly recall all the recent details. I think this hurt me a lot reading this b/c I had a hard time following along at certain points.
I still like Williams' books and i'll read more but this one wasn't my favorite.

Another gorgeously written, rigorously researched historical fiction winner by Beatriz Williams.

There is a reason I buy and devour everything she writes. She just doesn't go wrong for me.

This one had a few characters I did not like at all. And I definitely need a written version of the family tree that she published connecting the characters from all of her Schuyler family storylines.

But I'd recommend this one to any fan of historical fiction.

How does she write such compelling characters? Thoroughly enjoyed.

OK, this is annoyingly unedited, and descriptions of the men are repetitive and annoying. But I had to keep listening.

historical fiction involving the cold war and spies? YES.
since i binge-watched The Americans during the pandemic, i’ve been obsessed with spy rings and the soviets. this book did not disappoint. i loved the multiple POVs and the multiple timelines. i enjoyed both ruth and iris as main characters. and lyudmila! not to spoil anything… but damn. her story gets a twist at the end.
one of beatriz’s best. HIGHLY recommended.

2.5 stars for the first 2/3 of the book, 4 stars for the last 1/3. Jumps in time are fine. Jumps in character are fine. Jumps from third person to first person and back are, at least, permissible. However, combining all three, with some characters not being revisited for 5+ chapters at a time, and expecting the reader to follow along and remember where that particular thread left off, is not acceptable. I frequently had to flip back to previous chapters to remember where Ruth’s 1942 storyline left off, after three or four chapters of Iris and Sasha’s storyline in 1948. Once the storylines merge, though, hold on to your seats because the latter part of the book is a fun ride.
