An entertaining read! The first culture book I've read, and it's left me wanting more. Interesting characters who are both relatable and not, being of a society that is completely different than our own. I enjoyed challenging my own perspective to understand their motivations. It ends up being a bit deeper and rewarding than it seems on the surface.

I wish we went into more detail about the first few games of the tournament, although I admit it might have made that section more dry, I just loved the descriptions of the game. I felt like the character of Gurgeh was perfectly crafted, molded into indifference by the timeless being of his society. The added details of him not knowing certain things like lawlessness was nice but a touch odd nonetheless. The ending tournament game was amazing but I thought he was going to die and I was happy that Banks chose a nonstandard end to a main character. That didn’t work, which left me wishing things could’ve been different, but the ending remarks was a nice touch despite that.

Fantastic world building by Banks as we learn more about the Culture, its citizens, their abilities(? Not sure that's the right word), and the Azad Empire. While the player of games and the game itself take centre stage, for me, there is a lot more to this. There is a commentary on how different societies view each other, the game of politics, social structures, philosophy, fear, ignorance, and control. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
