4.5

I did not expect to like this book, so the fact that I'm here giving it a 4 star that is closer to a 5 than it has any right to be is crazy. But it was good. Seriously.

There are aspects of it that I really don't like, aspects of it that feel outdated, but luckily nothing inherently malicious. Regardless, I think it's really great, and I can't quite express why.
I definitely acknowledge that it's not gonna work for everyone though.

I think the fact that Chbosky is primarily a screenwriter is really obvious. It gives this book a quality that I can't quite explain, but it is something that a really liked.

Anyway, I can clearly not speak of this book in any way that isn't vague, so I'll end it here.

Basically The Catcher in the Rye if The Catcher in the Rye was actually good. Charlie is a fascinating and loveable character and him and his friends are incredibly deep and well written. Reading this novel really feels like you are taking a look into someone’s life. The gay representation in this novel is fantastic, especially considering it was still a taboo thing to write about when this novel was published. This is a must read for (especially) teenagers and adults alike, who like slice of life or growing up stories about loss of innocence.

I’m including trigger warnings because I had NO idea what was covered in this book.

Child abuse, Sexual abuse, Rape, Pedophelia, Molestation, Drug use, Alcohol abuse, Incest, Homophobia, Bullying, Suicide/suicidal thoughts, Grief, Abortion, Domestic abuse, Panic attacks/disorder, Mental illness, Addiction
Hate crime, Gaslighting, Toxic relationship, Forced institutionalism

How did I miss this book? How is this the first time I’ve read it?! I was doubtful about what value could be gone over in a book so small, and I am so glad that I was wrong. It wasn’t a book that I enjoyed, per say, but how it was able to pack so much punch is why I gave it 5 stars.

I was drawn in by the journal/letter style of storytelling. The voice of the MC, Charlie, was immature and naive for a high school freshman. It’s the first clue that something isn’t quite right. As the story progresses you hear about him making friends, going to high school parties, trying alcohol and drugs and crushing on a senior and first girlfriends.

I would say that this is a book for ages 15+ , because of content maturity.
