The best discoveries always happened to the people who weren't looking for them. - Roger

Perfect read for people who have the passion to travel. Amy and Roger's epic detour didn't only allow them to discover new things about themselves but also to find answers to their deepest questions and to realize that they also found each other along the way. A beautiful journey about coping with loss, gaining new experiences, meeting new people and finding love.

More like 3.5 stars. It absolutely dragged in some places, but it was just interesting enough that I wanted to read to the end. I liked the scrapbook style pages interspersed throughout the book.

I had a hard time getting through this book. To be honest, it took me 3 weeks just to finish this. I was excited for this but I don't know, halfway through it, I just felt a little bored. Probably because the pacing was quite slow for my taste. But nonetheless, Morgan Matson is good and I'm looking forward to acquiring and reading her Since You've Been Gone novel soon.

This was a quick, easy read, but there was nothing super special about it.

I loved this book. I love the main characters. I loved how they just went where the road took them and how their friendship turned into a relationship. It made me smile for sure.

After a fatal car crash that took the life of her father, Amy has refused to get back behind the wheel. While coping with her new reality without her dad and her twin brother in rehab - Amy's mother has decided to move the family from California to Connecticut. Seeing as Amy still has to work through her driving trauma, her mother hires Roger, a boy the neighborhood, to drive Amy and her car across the country. The drive from west to east ends up covering more than miles and the duo end the journey with less baggage than they started.

Though this one did take me a little bit of time to get through, I enjoyed the premise of the book. I liked that the author put in landmarks from each state and really made it feel like I was taking the road trip with them while reading. I love the relationship formed between Amy and Roger and appreciate that Amy wasn't the only one who experienced healing on the journey.

Emotionally
SpoilerI absolutely loved this book! It was such a quick and fun read.

The plot was adventurous. We follow Amy whose mother is forcing to move across the country after the death of her father. When her mom has to leave early, she arranges for Amy and her childhood friend to take a road trip together. I loved the travel aspects of this book. All the places they ended up going and the way they deviated from the original plan they were supposed to follow. I loved the way Matson incorporates postcards, playlists and other forms of mixed media kept the story fun and lighthearted which contrasted with Amy's struggles with grief and guilt which gave the book a heaviness and a realness. I would've liked for the ending to have been more stretched out and longer.

Amy was a little bit annoying and whiny at first but she slowly won me over. I loved her growth and how she slowly came to turns with her grief. The process of the road trip and deviating from the plans helped her so much and it really helped me appreciate her character more.

Roger was really sweet. He had the best intentions and really helped Amy a lot without being pushy. His personality was my favorite.

It was alright. I didn't find it spectacular or anything. For me, it was too slow-paced and I felt it was dragging a bit at times. However, I really did like the main characters and how Amy and Roger's friendship grows over the space of their trip together.
SpoilerI thought that their actual relationship just came out of nowhere, though. I wasn't really expecting it to happen, especially so close to the end of the book :/
Also. What an open ending. Ack.
