At the end I really skipped through the book. Although it is described as horror, nowadays it is more sci-fi, which is not my favourite. Especially combined with the outdated writing style.
I wasn't too sure about this when I started to read it but from about 30 pages in I found it hugely gripping. It seemed very similar to the Ridley Scott film Alien in its concept and from what I understand, Lovecraft was one of the first writers of horror fiction which leaned more towards sci-fi. This could easily be read in a day, very short, compelling and hugely enjoyable.

H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness is a must read for sci-fi horror/cosmic horror fans. Despite Lovecraft's problematic aspects, he is a father of the genre and the influence of his works is undeniable. That being said, the scientific reporting style of this story and outdated (early 20th century) language made it a bit slow to get through at times, but overall enjoyable. If I learned one thing, it's that the man loves the word "cyclopean." This rating is based on influence and ingenuity, not necessarily a top read for me.

Brilliant writing. There’s no character building, no world building, but this story is vividly told. Nowadays, At the Mountains of Madness would be sci-fi instead of horror.
