I begrudgingly trudged through this book because I’m a fan of this author’s work. Unfortunately, this one didn’t really land for me. While the concept for this book was very interesting, the execution of the author was quite overwhelming especially compared to his Dark Matter and Recursion.
The philosophical/moral angle of the book is very superficial, and the author focuses too much on random plot twists and unnecessary details. The main character embodied a kind of hollow masculinity — blandly self-assured, one-dimensional, and boring in a way that felt tied to being written through a stereotypically male lens. His lack of true introspection took away from the gravity and complexity of the plot. It almost reads like the author was vouching for a movie deal, not really to explore the complex ideas behind the subject matter.

Well this was kind of terrifying.
Some parts got a bit technical and dragged a little, but overall a really enjoyable sci-fi (with a side of potential future horror) book. This is the second Blake Crouch book I've read, and I will definitely read more.
