This is the second Blake Crouch novel I have read, and I loved them both. The first was "Dark Matter," and "Upgrade" had the same intensity and focus that I loved about the first.
I would classify them both as science fiction adventure novels, and they cover the gamut of some of the most current science and incorporate that into a page-turning adventure story.
Mr. Crouch does an excellent job of making his protagonists human, and you gain a deep empathy for the characters. This particular story was perfect because the main character has to shut down much of the emotional side of his personality after undergoing his transformation. The resolution of this dilemma was very well done and contributed generously to the overall story!
For those who love science fiction and how the interplay of what we are learning today might affect us and also love the action-adventure genre, I highly recommend "Upgrade"! I enjoyed this book so much that I immediately downloaded "Recursion" from my local library and will start immediately!

3.5 stars. Logan Ramsey works for the GPA (Gene Protection Agency), an agency that intends to keep the world safe from scientists manipulating DNA in mostly bad ways, but sometimes good too. Logan is the son of Miriam Ramsey, a famous geneticist, who planned to save the world’s food problems, but instead caused The Great Starvation. After taking a suspect into custody, Logan and his partner, Nadine, head out to a drop off location. While exploring this location, an explosion goes off; and Logan is injured. He is quarantined while they investigate if he was contaminated with a virus. It turns out that Logan wasn’t only contaminated with a virus, but a virus that changed his DNA. He starts to feel the effects of this “upgrade” in that his intelligence is soaring; his athletic prowess is increasing; and his focus on tasks is endless. This all sounds wonderful, but there are some drawbacks. Also, Logan is sure that this “upgrade” was no accident, so now he is on task to find out who is behind the upgrade and why. I thought the beginning of the book was great. I liked the premise and some of the futuristic ideas. However, the middle turned into an action movie and fell flat for me. In spite of the middle, the ending was again engaging. Overall, I liked the book, but it’s my least favorite when compared to Dark Matter and Recursion.
As the first book I've read from this author, it didn't disappoint. I went into it expecting it to be "just okay" at best. After I finished it, not only am I now a fan, I was also left thinking about the moral and ethical repercusions and advantages of the main topic of this book.

Written in 3 parts - all of which took unexpected turns that I really couldn’t have predicted. It was brilliantly webbed together. There were a few slow parts to the book, but still always had me wanting to read more.

Poor writing compared to his other books Dark Matter and Recursion, especially in part 1. Parts 2 and 3 were much more interesting, though, so I still enjoyed it overall. I wasn't a huge fan of the ending.
