Have to love a mystery with a faithful pet, especially one that spends time in a college library.

Great book - loved the twist ending. can't wait to start book #2.

This was the first book by this author and in some ways you could tell. However, I liked the book. Charlie Harris is a reference librarian in a small town in Mississippi. He has a Maine coon cat that he takes with him everywhere.

He lives in the house he inherited from his aunt and is somewhat lonely since his wife died. He has a college age border to try to get past his loneliness.

A rich and famous author returns to town for a gala reception at the college president 's home. But the famous author had a better reason to return to town. He had just found out he had a son 18 years age-the boy who lives with Charlie Harris.

The author is murdered and the librarian gets involved because people he cares about are suspects.

Meh.

I love this book series. Love the kitty Diesel who adds a special spice to this cozy murder mystery.

This series begins with Charlie Harris, a male college librarian (someone you do not see that often in books) and his Maine Coon cat "Diesel" (a breed known for its massive size, for cats) who live in the south.

This is a leisurely story about a highly successful author who grew up in the same town and has now returned after learning a big secret. Now he is dead and all kinds of secrets are coming out as Charlie tries to befriend his fellow citizens.

The story is fine though not a blockbuster. Written in 2010, it is surprising to find a couple of unnecessary inclusions that detract from the story. The hotel rooms are all named after Confederate generals (not politically correct as the real-life statues come tumbling down), and a distinct reference to male anatomy that is not appropriate for a cozy novel, not referenced in any way elsewhere in the book, and with the Me-Too movement now in evidence, definitely not appropriate words directed toward men or women. Finally, a 19-year-old young man continuously keeps calling his not-that-much-older landlord "sir." That may be more common in the South, but it seemed seriously overdone. Where was the editor?

Diesel shines in the form of giving comfort to those around him in distress. The librarian is an archivist and nicely shows some of what is involved in that profession. Nice escapist yarn.

3.5 ⭐️ Tardó un poco en iniciar con el crimen, pero luego de comenzó el asunto, casi no lo pude soltar.

I enjoyed the main character and his expressive cat. It was a nice change to have a male MC in a cozy. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters or community though. It was hard to keep them all straight and few of them felt fully developed. I also found the methodical pace and approach to the case a bit boring.

I almost always give series a couple of books before making a full judgment, so we’ll see what the next book has in store.
