A compelling gamut of fleshed-out supporting characters, intriguing magical abilities, and entertaining albeit slow-paced plot in a fantasy world inspired by Scandinavian lore. The FMC is not a fearsome warrior-type Mary Sue, but a young woman plucked from her ordinary peaceful life as a village baker and forced into hiding by puzzling circumstances surrounding her father’s death. Uprooted and grieving, she has to learn how to survive and fend for herself as she travels a perilous route to a place that she hopes will be her safe harbor, all the while coming face to face with the vast world around her, making new friends and enemies, and discovering unexpected parts of herself.

I enjoyed that the author is strategic and stingy with information they give away, and the reader has to peace it all together to be one step ahead of the characters. The reader is just like poor sheltered Silla who just left her village without preparation or any money to her name to wander a huge kingdom infested with monsters and bloodthirsty political agenda.
