Ok, I wasn't sure what I was going to rate this book until I got to the last 50 pages.

I enjoyed the story and the relationships, the intrigue, and the twists and turns. I love getting to know the band of warriors and following Silla's journey.

I can't wait to get to book two and see which relationships blossom from here. I hope that book two follows Silla's character again.

The only reason this book wasn't a five-star was because it didn't keep me engaged. I was able to put it down and go to bed, which made it take longer for me to read. I'm not sure why it didn't have me in the grip that most awesome books do, but there was something about it that made it easier to put down than normal.

Solid fantasy with twists and turns I didn’t see coming. Definitely going to keep reading the series.

“Let them think us lambs, when truly, we are wolves.”

What a fantastic debut novel by Demi Winters! A dark Viking inspired tale of a young woman trying to find freedom and safety in a world where dangers lurk all around. Silla, while naive, is a very lucky and clever protagonist. The reader is thrown into the story very quickly through a violent scene of stoning and murder. Winters did not shy away from showing the harsh realities of Silla’s world. By chapter 2, the mystery begins as Silla’s world gets turned upside down and she and her father are caught in an ambush. From there she is set off on a journey alone to a safe house where she seeks refuge in a place she does not even know she can survive to reach.

Silla is a resourceful girl and she deals with her grief and need for survival, and once we meet the infamous Bloodaxe Crew and the warrior Skraeda, the story only gets better. I really ended the third person multi-pov. Getting to see inside the minds of so many different characters really helped to push the story forward and see the perspectives the others experienced. I especially enjoyed this aspect when the plot started to go a little haywire for the protagonist, it was really fun to see through the mind of the antagonist(s), and how they were plotting their next moves. I believe it really helped in adding to the suspense and tension and events developed.

I also really enjoyed how this was not your typical romantic fantasy. Through the multi pov, the reader is able to see the conflict before it had even arisen for our main characters. While both characters start off looking for something light and fun with one another, a distraction while on a dangerous road, things develop quickly and betrayal remains right around the corner.

I am so excited to continue Silla’s journey in book 2. I hope some of these well developed mysteries finally start to be revealed and we get to learn more about Silla’s past and the ever mysterious Rey. For a man all about honesty, who the hell are you?!
