This was my first novel from Alderson and I'm shocked that I haven't read any of her previous books before. If all her books are as good as this one, then I am joining the Alderson fan club!
This story is about a family who is one second living in the comforts of their own home and the next they know there are intruders in their home and they are being held at gunpoint. But this attack is not random, it seems planned. They're looking for something specific, but what? Doesn't that sound like an interesting premise?
The story was told in the point of view of Ava, the mother, which was one of my favorite things about this novel. Alderson delves us into the mind of a mother's worst nightmare, one who is determined to find out who is trying to harm her family. The lengths she goes through!! Is someone in her family connected to this attack? Is someone keeping secrets from Ava? Maybe, maybe not, but what I can say is that Ava is not innocent herself. She is also keeping secrets.
Of course, she has to have secrets.
What is a thriller novel without secrets? Nothing! This is a must read thriller novel for all the fans of The Silent Patient and The Wife Between us, you will love this one! Secret after secret is revealed and I will give you a tip right now: Going into this book as blindly as possible will make it much enjoyable.
The plot is very complex and I guessed some of it. It's funny because I really thought that I guessed all of it but in reality I only knew about 20% of what was going in the novel. I can assure you that this novel will not only keep you guessing, but it will also keep you up at night flipping through the pages until you're at the last page still reeling from the final plot twist and it's 3 a.m.
I highly recommend reading this book and I anticipate that it will be a knockout once it hits the bookstores!
Thank you Mulholland Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

I enjoyed it for the most part, it was easy to speed through. I feel like this book was written to be one of those netflix shows you watch and then forget about a week later. The writing is good, the storyline is good, even if a little predictable. It definitely won't be your favourite thriller but you'll get the enjoyment out of it when you need it.
What starts off as a house burglary quickly descends into a life changing night for Ava Walker and her family. I don't usually read a book in one sitting, but this was so easy to read in one go (and given I had the peace and quiet to do) it was like a film. And the tension kept mounting as each chapter passed. This story makes us wonder how well do we know the people around us? And, those little white lies people tell can surely escalate. So what lies do the Walker family hold? I'll tell you but it would ruin your enjoyment of this very fast paced, action packed story. And, even when you think that the bad guys have been caught it just ain't over
Ava seems to have it all! A successful husband, three kids and a beautiful home. Surprise...not everything is as it seems. Secrets and irresponsible behavior come with consequences...some of which cannot be rectified.
I enjoyed this one! It definitely had a few parts that are difficult to imagine in real life but that’s why we read books, right? To leave this world and let our minds frolic in the imaginary for a short break. Well, at least that’s why I read fiction.

This story was a bit too soap opera-ish for me. The main characters acted in ways that had me questioning everything because they seemed so stupid. And since the characters were not well developed, it was difficult to figure out if their actions were "in character". The ending creeped me out quite a bit (and from talking to the other book club members, it seems we each interpreted it differently). And I hate when the only way the plot is resolved is by one of the characters explaining what happened since it wasn't explained during the story itself.
Sarah Alderson has created a true psychological thriller with twists and turns from start to finish. The story begins with our protagonist, Ava who is a wealthy wife of a IT developer, artist and mother of two of her own children and a step-son. She believes life is great when suddenly the rug is pulled out from under her and her world turns upside-down. There are so many twists and question marks throughout this book that the reader begins to wonder how reliable the narrator is and who is lying to whom. The story is fast paced and keeps you reading. It has some back and forth in the timeline, jumping from current to past events. This was to inform the reader of history but was well placed in my opinion and added to the story.
Definitely recommend - 4.5 stars
