Why Voltaire kindaaa

Same as it ever was.

Over 250 years old and still relevant. Candide takes a horrific and fantastical journey to find his love Cunegonde. Among his world travels his is a witness to religious hypocrisy (no faith is spared ridicule), violence, unimaginable misogyny, and the general exploitation of humans. All the main characters miraculously survive to reunite and tell their tales of woe, each one more terrifying than the next. Part "Canterbury Tales" part "Gulliver's Travels".

But for what purpose was the earth formed?" asked Candide. "To drive us mad," replied Martin.

A short read, was great at putting a a smile on my face.

A masterpiece. The low rating is because most people are idiots.

Pretty solid. I thought it might have a super bleak ending for awhile but I actually loved how it ended. Content with cultivating their farm instead of just blindly hoping that good things would just come or bad things would just occur.

I found this pretty confusing. Then again, I usually find satire pretty confusing.

Furious I hadn't read this until now but also I suppose that's how it came to be and maybe I wouldn't be furious in the same way that'll finally make me learn a god damn lesson about philosophy.

Holy racism, sexism, antisemitism, islamophobia, and xenophobia, Batman! I should have expected it but woof. The blurb on this book on my library's website was "every Classics fan should read it" and while I get that it is paradigmatic, this one is a big fat skip in my book.
