Candide

Voltaire

satire on liebniz's theory of the best of all possible worlds...a bit buddhist, to be frank.

This was a wild read. A lot happens really quickly with little detail or character development. The satire makes for an entertaining, yet sometimes terrifying read (lots of beating and rape). It is almost humorous what Voltaire pokes fun at, and how some of the same stereotypes and cliches seems to still be around today.

I was surprised by how easy it was to read and by how much I enjoyed it.

Classic satire, a great warm-up for Ovid! A little heavy-handed for the modern reader but with enough snark and a "chorus" represented through our cynical character Martin in the latter half of the novel to maintain the reader's interest through a wearyingly predictable slew of sometimes avoidable misfortunes. A welcome reminder nonetheless that we ought to "cultivate our garden," as it is our best chance at happiness and a "best world."
