Voltaire never lets down the pace, and proves his point in the most painstaking - and hilarious - way possible. I've been putting off listening to Bernstein's entire operetta until I've read this. I can already say that he perfectly captured the spirit of the novella in that famous, catchy overture.
3.5/5 stars. Honestly I did enjoy this book with all of the philosophy weaving in and out of the text, but it was really boring. I know I’m criticizing a classic, but perhaps this is why this isn’t one of the more popular classics. The reason I picked up this book was because of the operetta by Leonard Bernstein, which I played an arrangement of in orchestra.
Synopsis: A man by the name of Candide goes on an adventure to find his true love, Cunègonde, when he is kicked out of the royal family’s castle for approaching Cunègonde romantically. A whole slew of events domino thereafter and Candide holds onto his belief that we live in the best of all possible worlds and that the unfortunate events in the world happen for the better. Candide goes through trial after trial of unfortunate events, yet his belief holds firm.
My main problem with this book was that the ending seemed so synthetic and abrupt. The resolution of the entire point of the novel only arrived at the last 4 pages or so of the book. About halfway through the book, it got really boring because Candide keeps going through these unfortunate trials and it just gets old after a while. There isn’t much new information gained from these trials, but yet he continues to go through them. Each new event or tragedy is absolutely ridiculous which just makes it hard to believe. After just a little bit of the book, you realize that there is no real way to believe what happened to Candide is true. It is completely unrealistic.
I would suggest this book for those who love philosophy. I pretty much think that is the only way I enjoyed and could make it through this book even though it is a very short book and should be a quick read.

An absurd, wry tone on top of some fairly pointed commentary by Voltaire. There's a staggering amount of brutality experienced by all the characters, including main character Candide as he travels all over the world in search of his love Cunegonde. I was amused frequently even while being appalled by the situations. I suspect some parts of the commentary went over my head as I'm really not familiar with Enlightenment philosophies.

I loved it! It represents human ability to bring evil to the world very vividly.
The childlike mind of Candide fascinates me with his love of those who are harmed.
