Other than the fact that I figured out "the twist" in the first chapter, it was a good read.

I don’t even know how to put my feelings into words about this book. The writing is wonderful, the content is tough, and the twist at the end, whoa!
Listened to the audio version from audible.com. Loved the story of two girls growing up in difficult circumstances and relying on each other, but the ending was such a surprise that I wanted to go back and read it again!

Was für ein düsteres Buch.
Ich habe die Story geglaubt, auch wenn Teile zu extrem gewirkt haben – ein bisschen wie “Sad Porn” bei “Ein Wenig Leben”, als wäre die Anzahl an Schlechtigkeiten, die unsere Protagonistin hier erfährt, künstlich hochgedreht. Dennoch hat es sich durch die kindliche Erzählperspektive echt angefühlt.
Ich habe den Plottwist kommen sehen, aber auch nur, weil ich wirklich viel über die krasse Wendung nachgedacht habe, die die Klappentexte ein bisschen zu sehr angepriesen haben. Und es gab auch viel am Buch, dass mich überrascht hat.
Die Story stellt sehr gut, sehr schonungslos das Schicksal dar, das Menschen in den heruntergekommenen Gegenden der USA mit schlechter Schulbildung droht, der Teufelskreis aus Gewalt und Hoffnungslosigkeit, in den man dabei leicht gerät. Und das durch die Augen eines Kindes, das Teile davon nicht versteht und Teile davon vollkommen akzeptiert, ohne sich im Klaren darüber zu sein, wie unfair sie sind.
Ein düsteres, ein zum Teil grausames Buch, aber meisterlich gemacht.

Slow start for me but after first 2 chapters I was drawn in. I never saw the ending coming. It was a complete surprise for me!
