Decided to re-read this since I remember immensely enjoying it the first time, especially the shocking ending. Because I knew how it was going to end, I read it with a different perspective, but it was still just as good.

This book was heartbreaking. I found it hard to read at first because it does deal with child abuse, but then I got to the point that I could not put the book down. I just had to find out what was going to happen next.

It deals with two little southern sisters,Carrie and Emma, living a life of poverty and being abused by their step-daddy. The book leads you through their traumatic life before it brings you to a shocking ending. It is a must read and one that you will want to recommend to others.

this book was really good and really heartbreaking. I knew where it was going from the start, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. If you can handle reading about domestic abuse, I recommend this one - I think I got it from Amazon for a few dollars.

I had a hard time with this book. It was plenty readable -- and yet the content was hard to read about. It's a book about child abuse and neglect, and while it's not really graphic in its description, it is the focus of the book. The author was liberal with her swear words, to the point I'm a little embarrassed to say that I kept reading.

But the reviews I read promised a great ending, so I persevered. And yes, there is an interesting twist at the end -- but unfortunately I closed the book feeling as hopeless for the characters as I had from the beginning.

I feel like this would have made for an interesting short story ... as a novel, though, it's entirely too much time spent in a dark place.

This is a heartbreaking story of abuse and neglect told from the eyes of a child. It is beautifully written.

Mildly traumatic story about child abuse with a surprise ending. Good, if that's your type of thing.

there were parts of this book so heart wrenching i could hardly read it.

This book had me from the first page and I could not put it down. Very sad & heartbreaking story told from 8 yr. old Carrie's perspective. This story has stayed with me for a very long time. I never saw the ending coming!
