I can barely think of the right words to describe my experience reading this book. Reading about the abuse that Caroline suffered hurt my heart. No child should every have to endure anything like that. However, I definitely had an OMG moment near the end when a secret was revealed. I can't believe I didn't pick up on it from near the beginning. I hated the mother and Richard from the very beginning, which I'm sure that's what the author was aiming for. One thing that bothered me while I was reading was not being able to figure out the time period. I guess in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter, but I still would like to know.
Although the the subject matter in the book is heartbreaking, I loved that the story was told from Caroline's point of view. I loved how the story came together. This will definitely be a story that stays with me for a long time.

The ending is really good and so heartbreaking. A lot of the reviews I read before reading it called it a surprise ending but I guessed about a quarter into the book that Emma wasn't real so it wasn't surprising at all but it was satisfying to know I was right. What I loved most, having guessed about Emma, was that I could pick up little things while reading that really solidified to me that Emma was just a dissociative personality that Carrie created after watching her father die. I am really looking forward to seeing what the sequel will cover.
I read this in just a few hours a fabulous read with a real twist at the end although the story line was upsetting at times
by page 38, had figured out the twist. Didn't make it less heartbreaking, but the ending wasn't a surprise.
So I hated this book until the end. As a mom, I can no longer read books about children that are abused by their parents or guardians. It makes me physically ill. But the ending (although it was disturbing) was a leap from what I thought the ending would be, so that made Carrie's character that much more interesting to me. With that being said, the only reason I am giving this book a 2 is for that reason. I will not be reading this book again (sorry Linda).
I didn't enjoy reading this book at all. It was another book that felt like work to read. I almost gave up on it a few times, but kept with it since it was a quick (even if it was somewhat boring) read. If it wasn't for the ending, I would have given it one star. Not to say the ending was great, but it was better than the rest of the book.
A nice read, written with nice flow. I have to say, that while the twist at the end may have entered my mind once while reading the book, I was still surprised. The mother totally pissed me off throughout the whole book. Read it, you'll know what I mean.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I just could not put it down, I had to know what happened next. I really believed I was inside the head of an 8 year old girl living in North Carolina. I love the language the book was written in too (local dialect). I had no idea where the book was going - just that we were building up to a big disaster - until just before I read it! Brilliant.
I didn't love this book at first, it's pretty depressing stuff (totally disfunctional family!). The ending, however, made it worth reading and has kept me thinking about it days after finishing.
