My only criticisms of this book are 1) a little too much introduction and backstory. Maybe that's because I was already familiar with a lot of Everest history, but it's almost half history/backstory and half the actual 1996 incident, and 2) he frequently switches between using first and last names, which made it even harder to keep track of the many people involved.

The story of the 1996 incident is incredible. It is unbelievable how many twists and turns there were over such a short period of time - humans can be amazingly durable when the alternative is death.

The level of resilience, courage, and sheer will contrasted with hypoxia-induced mistakes and poor discipline made for a really complex story that Jon wrote very well with just the right amount of detail and commentary. If someone wrote a fictional Everest drama, it would probably be pretty similar to the true events in this book.
