As a person that typically finishes a book in 3-4 days this was a LOONG read- it took me over a month. It wasn’t an issue with me being disinterested in the book but because it dropped so much lure and history about mountaineering that I kept getting distracted and watching youtube/ tiktoks about modern day ascents. I found the content and the story absolutely fascinating- I couldn’t stop talking about the book as I was reading it. I really believe this has opened me up to reading more memoirs in the future. This story was definitely a heavy read (obviously a lot of people pass away) But I felt so connected to the story by then end- I felt like I was there with the author going through the hypoxia delirium. Anyways incredible read.
Great read for fans of narrative nonfiction. K's matter-of-fact style and exhaustive reporting situates this book in the minds and hearts of those affected. Content warning for descriptions of injury, sickness, and emotional distress. Excellent audiobook version.

I swear this book was 70% names.
It was a fairly interesting read but for the most part it was pretty dull. I feel like information that should have been said in the book, like all the crap you have to carry with you, all the gear you have to wear, how the hell you manage to still have hot water after six weeks in the bitter cold, and the overall practice of mountaineering was missed. While I learned some stuff from the book alone, I've had to look into other resources to answer most of the questions I had.

Riveting personal account of this disaster. I learned a lot about mountaineering and the fascination Everest holds for some people.
