Stars a tricky metric for this one. The narrative is strongly constructed and it’s certainly informative and enlightening, but it doesn’t keep its promises.

The initial focus on the near east + Central Asia is strong, but by the Middle Ages something is amiss. The Fatimids fall off-stage while crusaders bicker, the Ottomans are similarly hidden as the Portuguese sail the southern seas. From 1492 on, it’s a history of the west as usually told, if with a little more light on the peripheral east.

If you came to this to know the history of the Silk Road territories in the eras in which they’re usually hidden, you’ll learn a lot about a lot of things, but leave mildly dissapointed.

This book is full of so much information I could not even take it all in. I listened on audio but had to switch to the physical book to follow better.
