I had been waiting to read this. I love world history. The first half of the book was very interesting and had me intrigued. The last quarter was less so. There were about four chapters on oil and the relationship between England, US, Iran, and Iraq. It just felt out of place with the rest of the book.  The epilogue helped wrap some things up and ended it nicely though.

Absolutely fantastic.
The first half was really interesting. I love the old history. Hearing about the rise and fall of the empires and how new land was found was fascinating.

From Portuguese, Spanish, British empires to the English and then American was eye opening.

What really is interesting though is what the future brings and the conclusion looking forward to China and Middle East now was interesting.

This book was very oil focused and I think a larger investigation into mining materials for renewable energy and batteries would be interesting.

This book is sort of weird because it’s supposed to be about the history of the old silk roads and the new silk roads, but it’s largely about how other areas have acted upon the area.

It’s well researched but also v dry so it’s hard to get through. I don’t know why but it feels like what should be the focus of the narrative isn’t really. It tries to be an economic, political, and religious summary and kind of ends up as none.

Required reading for all politicians

This is a scholarly and well written history, from the perspective of the trading routes called the Silk Roads. it reminds us that the principles often cited by the protagonists from these countries and regions are really a diversion from the real issue of control of trade and commodities, once being silk, then opium and now oil. None of the parties, ancient and modern, are spared from the dispassionate criticism. It is a required analysis which more should read.
