I'm happy that this book still holds up after 20 years. It's surprisingly dark for a middle grade series (I guess like "A Series of Unfortunate Events" and anything by the Brothers Grimm...), but there are just enough bright spots to keep it somewhat light. I was dying at all of the foreshadowing during this reread
especially anything related to Charlie's dad being "asleep"! EEEEEEEE
and I thoroughly enjoyed the reread. The narrator went a little ham on some of the voices which very a little over the top at some points, but overall it was fun to listen to.

This wasn't what I expected for some reason. I definitely enjoyed it, but I guess from the cover art, I was expecting a more juvenile book, but this was a little darker than I expected. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and learning more about the Red King

Kept my eight year old entertained as a read-aloud...the surface story is fun and entertaining but it does lack any sort of depth.
