This is a great and wonderful book! I look forward to finishing the entire series!

A childhood favorite that holds up over a decade later.

Omg ich habe diese Rheie früher geliebt, wie konnte ich sie nur vergeseen

The amount of frustration I had reading this book. The adults are very childish while the kids more adult than the real adults; it was way too black and white. I give it three stars because it does have a fun and interesting plot, and it did leave me hooked. However, it feels like every adult was a bully in the story. The characters didn't act like what an actual person would, it was.. so frustrating. There was also a lack of explanations or scenes that needed to be included - for example, Emma looked at the window and decided she would try to fly. Next immediate paragraph was her meeting Paton on a street on accident and going towards the same destination. No mention of how she got there, did she even fly, did others realise she was gone, he never questioned her identity, how did she find him. So much of frustration and confusion.
adventurous mysterious

When Charlie Bone discovers accidentally that he can hear people in photographs speak, his dad's side of the family takes over. They give him tests and poke and prod him to determine if this is a legitimate gift and whether he should be sent to special school. Charlie tries to deny it but can't because the pictures are so loud. He is sent to Bloor's Academy, away from his best friend and his mom. He learns about secrets that he shouldn't and meets others like him: both nice and mean. With cats that can set fire to things and a box that is trying to open itself, Charlie isn't at school long before he gets wrapped up in a variety of different schemes.

This book has lots of comparisons to Harry Potter but it really is a weak substitute. There isn't "magic" per say, but a few of the characters have unique abilities. That said, these abilities are hardly explored at all in the book and take a back seat once they are announced. I'm not sure I understand what the point is of having a character that can hear people within photographs if he only uses it a couple of times throughout the book.

Not much happens in this book, not much is required to fix the problems, and not much is described of the characters. All in all, it's a pretty shallow book, though I'm sure it would have a good audience of young kids - maybe 6-8 years old.

I can see why people have said that the Charlie Bone books are similar to the Harry Potter books, but without the super-obvious spell-casting and magic. This book had a similar combination of magic, adventure, and mystery that the early HP books had. I enjoyed this book, but not nearly to the extent that I enjoyed Harry Potter. Nonetheless, I would definitely have copies of Charlie Bone in my library, especially for those kids who have read all the HP books and want something similar.

Jenny Nimmo said yes there will be plot convinces, and what about it?
Very fun to be back in this world, I really like the overall ideas of this book, and I wish it had been written now where middle grade is allowed to be more detailed and complex, while still being aimed at children. It was just a little too bare bones, a little too simple. But I still had a really fun time with it and appreciate the tone the book was going for
