Good middle grade series
A lot of people have tried to compare this to Harry Potter, and HP has had such a widespread influence that any kid in any school with magical goings-on is going to be compared to it, but this is quite a different story entirely. It stands completely on its own, with a unique cast and set of relationships.
I liked it. I would probably like it more if I were 12, but that's not the author's fault. It was a satisfying read (listen) for a day off of work, and I'll go through the rest of series to see how Charlie ends up.

Midnight for Charlie Bone was described to me as "a bit like a Harry Potter" for younger children. As a huge HP geek, this kind of put me off of the series, And it was only when my students started reading it that I grudgingly decided to give it a go.
What I found is that Charlie Bone is a very good book about a boy who finds out he has an exceptional gift, is sent to a special school to have the gift "monitored", and in the meantime becomes embroiled in a mystery that -- if he solve it-- may save some innocent lives. The characters in Charlie Bone are well developed. One finishes this first book in the series feeling as if they really know Charlie, his neighbor and best friend Benjamin, Charlie's mother, grandmother Maisie, Grandma Bone, and curious Uncle Peyton. We meet and come to love Fidelio Gunn, Olivia Vertigo, and Julia Engledew. The setting is a jumble of modern day and past-like customs and curiosities. Regular humans live among the "endowed" (the ones with magic), but don't seem aware of their special powers. The plot takes the reader on a whirlwind ride that, for the most part, is interesting and makes sense. Many of the first book's conflicts are solved by the end of the book, but there are plenty of other topics and problems that are not resolved, and leave the reader interested to pick up book 2.
I enjoyed the book, and feel certain I will continue reading the series as there are unanswered questions I want to find the answers for. Is it "another Harry Potter series"? I wouldn't say that,...not at this point anyway, but it is a good book that I feel I can eAsily recommend to my students.
Well. I’m really just listening to these audio books as a fun flashback to middle school. So I’ll be listening to them all to see how it wraps up. That said, predictable story line and not great character development, I think having to do with the point of view it was written in. So, meh. A fun little listen but I’m only in it to see how the story plays out.

I remember this series when it came out while I was in intermediate school and how it was seen as a huge Harry Potter clone. It starts with our boy Charlie Bone who discovers he can hear voices in photos. It gets him sent to Bloor’s Academy, a gifted magical school and there he will find himself on a magical journey to find the missing child of the photo.
Personally, it definitely feels like a “HP” clone but “Bone” still manages to be its own fantasy story. A enjoyable and magical read that has its own magical tricks up its sleeves. B+ (83%/Very Good)

This book was alright overall. The intended audience was a lot younger than I was at the time that I read it, which is probably why I didn't enjoy it more.
one really good book. i ADVIZE IT FOR PPL WHO NEED A CHALLENGE
Great Pre-Harry Potter book--not as dark or complex but still good action and great characters with whom readers will identify.
