Happily reaching my goodreads goal with a [a:Marissa Meyer|4684322|Marissa Meyer|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1558121336p2/4684322.jpg] book.
Gilded, a Rumpelstiltskin retelling, follows Serilda, a Miller's daughter blessed by the God of Lies. With a talent for storytelling and golden eyes, Serilda is an outcast. One night, as a Dark Faerie King begins his hunt, Serilda is thrown into a trouble and her only saving grace - a story. Serilda tells a story of weaving straw into gold. Now, every full moon the Erlking expects her to either turn the straw into gold or die with the sunrise. Death seems near until a mysterious boy appears in her cell offering help as long as she can pay the price.
I love the way Marissa Meyer writes retellings. With the perfect combination of the original story itself and so many twists and new aspects that make the story exciting. You don't need to be overly familiar with Rumpelstiltskin's story to appreciate this one.
Serilda as a main character is enthralling. She's unique, full of layers and not the stock standard YA fantasy lead. She's quick to think, makes mistakes, and gets herself out of messy situations just as quickly as she gets herself into them. And I absolutely loved her. The epitome of gaslight, gatekeep and girlboss.
Now, for our golden boy, Gild. Without giving too much away, his character was not what I expected him to be and I loved every bit of that. Once again, a multi-dimensional character that was lovable.
The supporting characters were great, really added to the story and felt like they had their own stories and lives. All the kids were super cute!
I did really enjoy the romance, all the highlighting was insane. I think if it had been more slowburn, this would've been a full 5 stars.
From the writing style, to characters and all the twists and reveals, this was absolutely stunning

I don’t think this is anything revolutionary, but it is interesting. I love a retelling, and Marissa Meyer has done a good job of reimagining rumplestiltskin (or however you spell it). The characters are a little simple, and the twists weren’t that surprising. I still think I’ll read the next book though.

I usually enjoy Marissa Meyer and was so excited for this Rumpelstiltskin retelling but this was not my cup of tea. The plot had potential but I did not love the direction it went nor the pacing. And the characters did not have me invested either.

I cannot recall if I’ve read any retelling on Rumpelstiltskin, but I’m glad I chose to read this one. This book was full of folklore and the cryptic ambiance old fairytales have. It truly feels like a classic fairytale with a twist. The characters and the sweet romance stand out. Love to read about a heroine that isn’t necessarily the “good girl”.
A great YA fantasy with love, action and adventure.
