The strength of this mystery is the setting. Venice is why I picked it up, and it's very tangibly and vividly drawn. The range of suspects is likewise well-drawn, though they do feel more like archetypes than deep and complex characters. I was engaged by the mystery and it kept me turning the page. However, I never felt a deep emotional connection to anything happening on page, and I don't feel any burning desire to rush out for the next book in the series. An easy read.

I thought this was a nice little mystery. I enjoyed the characters and liked the author's writing style. I will probably read more in the series.

Fast, pulpy fun and filled with so much transportive detail about Venice and its colorful citizens.

I wanted to read a Donna Leon novel because my mom likes this series about a police commissioner in Venice a lot, plus around-the-world project relevance. This one was okay but nothing special. The insider view of Venice was interesting, but Leon's writing is quite humdrum. And like most murder mysteries it came across as so contrived to me, so constructed by the author and not arising from reality. Perhaps she got better in time, but I'm not sure I'll read more.

I enjoyed this cozy mystery set in Venice. This book brought back many great memories of my visit to the beautiful "Queen of the Adriatic." The author's description of the city is right-on and had me nodding throughout the book. "Yeah, So True, Absolutely." Her writing was concise and, at times, witty. The death was Agatha Christie-esque and so was its resolution but that took nothing away from this fine book. Written in the early 90s (as was my visit) it predates cell phones and Google. A nice change to the high-tech police procedurals we experience today.
