omg I love august

I love how August told Lucas he was it for him. Yes August is a psychopath but that was kind of romantic. Want at first sight because of course August can’t love. I guess I’m screwed up because that seems like the kind of love that would last. Too bad for Lucas if he ever lost interest. It’s funny and sweet as much as it is a stalker staking his claim. I love August.

Psycho by Onley James (Necessary Evils #2)
Length: 7h 48m
Narrator: Liam DiCosimo
Source: Hoopla
Publication date: Dec. 15, 2021

“The psycho and the psychic. We’re truly not fit for anybody but each other.”

Unhinged, the first book in the Necessary Evils series, introduced us to the Mulvaneys and quickly hit the ground running. It was dark, funny, sexy, gory, and completely improbable in the most entertaining, demented way. Psycho, which is the second book, says “Hold my beer.” And I loved it!

Here we meet August Mulvaney, our lovable vigilante professor, and Lucas Blackwell, a discredited, disgraced FBI agent with the gift of clairvoyance. Like its predecessor, Psycho is insta-obsession on August’s part with Lucas not far behind. Weirdly, they are adorable together, and it works. August is very aware that he struggles socially and doesn’t really give a damn … until he decides he wants Lucas and doesn’t know how to get him. So, our cinnamon-roll killer uses his photographic memory to learn how to woo our former profiler, and it is both nerdy and heartwarming. Lucas doesn’t stand a chance.

There’s a different Big Bad in this book … mostly since the Mulvaneys killed everybody from Adam’s and Noah’s story. Rest assured, this one is equally repulsive. Their end is more graphic, and the brothers are right there again to back up August and Lucas with plotting the takedown and cleaning up the mess. Of course, they offer up a healthy dose of comic relief with their griping and grumbling at each other, too.

Narration is perfection, once again. Liam DiCosimo voices each character distinctively without any of them feeling overly exaggerated, and he continues to be one of my favorite voice actors out there.

Maybe pick it up if you like:

Still curious?
🩸 Definite “We decide what we are” vibes
🔪 Protective/possessive/obsessive MC
🩸 Nerdy college professors
🔪 Psychopathic genius x psychic former FBI agent
🩸 Neurodivergent and mental-health rep
🔪 Dark humor
🩸 Found family (of psychopaths, but still)

Bottom line: This series is a fun ride. Yes, the vibes in each book are probably going to be very similar, and no, you should not rely upon a work of fiction to accurately define or wholly represent the mental disorders mentioned in this series. (That’s what the DSM-V is for.) All the same, I’m eating up every single one of these books and invite you to join in on the chaos. As always, heed the TWs.

A psycho and a psychic... what a pair they make. I had so much fun while reading this story!!! Both August and Lucas were a blast and seeing their relationship develop was an enjoyable reading experience.

Psycho focuses on the unlikely love story between August, a psychopathic professor who murders criminals in his spare time, and Lucas, an ex-FBI profiler now a fellow professor who is clairvoyant.

Psycho has a fascinating premise where August struggles with relating socially to others and lacks any meaningful and true personal connections with others. Meanwhile, Lucas also struggles to connect with others because of his visions and impressions of others through a simple touch.

Lucas and August literally run into one another leaving Lucas horrified at the truth beneath August's professor exterior. August on the other hand is instantly smitten, which leads to an obsession and fascination with his shocked co-worker.

Psycho is a fast-paced romantic thriller that is filled with sweet moments of devotion between both MCs that depicts mixed within a mystery of epic proportions. I love learning about this crazy family of psychopaths and seeing each family member get their HEA. This was another winning installment in the Necessary Evils series and I cannot wait for the next one.

I thought that it was an interesting read and hit a lot of my main wants with this kind of story—protective and obsessive. Probably would read again but wouldn’t be the first book I grab.
