August is perfection. The sweetest psychopath ever!!

I can not get enough of this series. I love everything about it. August and Lucas are just swoon worthy. For real.

“The rabbit in you attracts the wolf in me. I can’t help that. It’s instinctive.”

3.5 stars. I liked this more than the first book in the series (which I did like a lot!) but it's still not quite there for me. I keep thinking about how these books come so close to hitting all my buttons, because I really do love reading about obsession, and romances where the couple is kind of co-dependent in a not very healthy way. I just think I'd prefer a bit more realism, where these books are kinda over the top.

Anywho. August is a college professor but also a psychopath who loves torturing bad guys and killing them. Lucas is a disgraced FBI profiler turned professor but also a psychic (???? run with it I guess) who has a deranged killer after him. Just like in the first book, August becomes immediately obsessed with Lucas, and the lightning fast speed of their connection is baked into the book, and it's supposed to be that way. I just don't like it! Give me all of this, the unhinged romance and obsession, August seeing Lucas as a treasure he needs to protect, but give it to me over the span of a couple months, at least. They did have good chemistry, and I liked seeing Lucas come to terms with the fact that August has pretty much imprinted on him and there's no getting rid of him, and then reconcile with the fact that he returns those feelings. And like the first book, this is really sexy. But while I liked the romance, I just didn't feel satisfied with it.

It was interesting getting to see more of the Mulvaney clan though. The couple from the first book made appearances, and I still really really liked them. I'm super interested in the other brothers and what their romances will be like. (I'm especially intrigued about Aiden, I hope I'm right about his love interest.) I loved the banter and bickering between the brothers, and I got those found family vibes I wanted. In a fucked up way, because they're all murderers, but that's part of the weird charm.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Liam DiCosimo, and IDK how much I really liked it. His reading wasn't my favourite, nor were the voices he gave the characters. I continued with it because it was convenient, but IDK if I'll bother with the audiobooks for the rest of the series if the narrator is the same. I'm intrigued by Atticus, so I'm excited for his romance. Even though these books aren't my favourite, they're very very readable.

I love the Mulvaney family. I think i still prefer the Elite Protection series to this one so far, but I’m looking forward to the third book and more books in this universe. I want to read from the perspectives of the twins especially I think. I can’t decide which Mulvaney brother is my favorite but I think so far I’m leaning towards the twins. August and Lucas had an interesting dynamic in this book and I did like August’s perspective, though I don’t know how I feel about his autism basically being compared to psychopathy.

I loved August and Lucas's dynamic and August's attempts to court Lucas were adorable.

I liked the serial killer plot and Lucas and August are a great team. I am autistic myself and I always like when autistic characters are included in stories. August may be a genius but he still struggles like many of us on the spectrum do and I thought it was a nice touch to include him having hyper sensory issues.

I still don't know how I feel about Lucas and his psychic power though. Whilst it's cool how it works, it just didn't feel right for this series, which hasn't included anyone else with any powers so far, and for all intents and purposes, seems to be set in the real world. Perhaps Onley believes in clairvoyant and psychic powers?

Overall though it was a good read.

“I don’t know what love feels like, but I imagine it’s like the feeling I’m having right now.”

Excuse me while I swoon over the sweetest psychopath who's a professor by day and a dark vigilante by night aka Batman aka August Mulvaney. The plot was dark af but these brothers made me giggle and smile like a lunatic

5⭐️ Best dark comedy series I’ve encountered. The banter between the merry band of misfit brothers is hilarious. Onley James is a comedic genius.

August and Lucas are wonderful together. I love how caring and thoughtful August is, despite his inability to feel empathy and his raging homicidal tendencies. I really liked the psychic premise of this one. It was original.

These books are so entertaining and action-packed! I never want the series to end!

“I just…like the way he smells. I look at him and I find myself wondering what his skin tastes like.”
“Oof. Easy, Dahmer,” Adam said. “Maybe don’t start with that.”

“I want to keep him.”
“Bruh. Those are thinking thoughts not speaking thoughts,” Noah coached. “You can’t just go around telling strangers you’ve imprinted on them like some werewolf in a Twilight movie. They won’t get it.”
